*1 - No proof but I strongly believe it was Trifexis.  He had been on Comfortis and we decided to switch to Trifexis since it covered both fleas and heartworms. Nothing else was different in his diet. Doing research I came across two things: (1) A dog's pupils can become dilated so as to make the entire eye look black due to too much toxicity in the body. (2) Several holistic vets state never administer flea medication and heartworm medication at the same time.  I immediately stopped the Trifexis. It took months and months but his eyes are completely back to chocolate brown and there have been no more episodes of  his skin darkening.

*2 - Kirby had missed a Heartworm Chew so we had to pull blood. Since he is home fed I decided to have a full work up to make sure he was healthy. The results were alarming. His kidneys, pancreas and liver were healthy but the numbers were so out of whack. I realized how much cat food he "sneaks" which is loaded with protein and fat so we hoped that was the problem. Making sure there was no way he could get to the cat food, we continued to feed him as normal but stopped all added vitamins and supplements.  Three months later he was retested.

*3 - More blood was pulled for a complete testing.  All of his numbers are in the normal ranges.
